Irresistible fabric…
Have you ever come across fabric that is just perfect, but you know the quality is terrible? Well, I bought it anyway. The fabric used in the triangles for this quilt was from Amazon. I had a hunch that it would be low quality, but I couldn’t resist it. When I initially bought it, I didn’t have a project in mind. When I came across Cottoneer’s free quilt pattern, I knew it would be perfect.
This was my third quilt ever, so the difference between good quilting cotton fabric and ‘other’ was only a concept; I had never had both to touch and work with—quality matters. The cheap fabric was thin and not as durable as the high-quality fabric I used for the rest of the quilt. It made some of the quilting process a bit difficult, but I managed well in the end.
Besides fabric quality, one of the most significant learnings was the importance of pinning before sewing. I ended up with many pieces that were misaligned post-sewing. It all worked out in the end, and this is one of my favorite quilts, but I am well and truly ‘learning by doing’.
I started this quilt in our old apartment which didn’t have a lot of working space; I was using my home office desk, which is relatively small. Leo, our Maine Coon was around 6.5-7kg at this point and would squeeze himself in.
Our new apartment is so much bigger, and I finally have a dedicated sewing desk and area!
With the blocks complete, it was time to assemble the quilt top.
The back fabric I got was just a hair too small, so I needed to come up with a way to make it work. I had lots of little squares left over from the front, so I sewed a column together. Kristian helped with some of the math, so I knew that with the column, it would be enough to fit the whole back.
I took this quilt back home to the US with me so I could work on it over Christmas vacation. My mom loved the quilt that she ended up keeping. I love the colors in this quilt and would like to do more in this color scheme.
Before heading home to Norway, I forgot to take pictures of the quilt, so my family took some for me.
